Chapter 20

'Xiu, did you put me to bed last night?' Detective Widcombe asked entering the large kitchen, settling by the breakfast bar.

'I assisted you Sarala, yes. You would have slept in your jeans otherwise,' Xiu answered offering a glass of light green liquid. 'How do you feel?'

'Tired — a good tired.' She flexed her arms. 'Like after a good workout.'

'Jarrod has asked me to continue to train you.'

'Last night... did that really happen?' the detective asked hesitantly, afraid to speak the words aloud lest she make a fool of herself.

'Open your mind and look for yourself.'

After a moment's silence, Xiu prompted the detective: 'Remember what it felt like when Jarrod was in your mind, the shape and texture of your thoughts. Feel your energy flow.'

Xiu watched the energy in Sarala's aura shift and change as she struggled to free her mind's eye. All of a sudden, the detective's energy burst forth, enhancing the glow of her normal aura.

'Xiu!' Detective Widcombe cried, ‘I see you.’

'Congratulations. You have taken a small step on a journey that will change you forever.'

'Change?'

'You will see people for who they are. Once you have mastered reading an aura, you will know when someone is lying, who is corrupt and most importantly, who is under the influence of evil.'

'I don't understand.'

'Evil is everywhere, Sarala. It consumes the weak, corrupts the impressionable. Rarely does evil show itself as an entity. The Order of Light enters the shadows to cast evil from our world.'

'You're talking about the devil?'

'No. There are many forms of evil. We leave the devil for your western churches to deal with, it has become their speciality. You do know that Jarrod is from another dimension? You Stepped with him to the space between worlds.'

'Nowhere? Oh God! I can talk about it with you…how? Jarrod stopped me mentioning anything about...’ Sarala paused as if the word refused to exit her mouth, ‘magic...'

Xiu smiled, ignoring Sarala's question. 'Nowhere is Jarrod's term for it, yes. Some dimensions are more magical than others — from these we suffer the most powerful denizens.'

'Jarrod mentioned this. He said they cannot stay on Earth for long.'

'Long enough to twist the minds of those around them. Deviants abound nowadays. Murderers, child molesters, rapists — all of these would have been slain in times past. This was not just to prevent them from repeating their heinous crimes. It was to limit the volume of unwitting recruits the demons could enslave for their machinations. The more abhorrent the crime, the easier the person is for the demons to twist and manipulate.'

'I'm sorry, you can't expect me to take all of this seriously. It sounds like a plot for a horror movie.'

Xiu smiled. She had said too much, too soon. Western civilisation bred cynics. 'When do you go back to work?'

'Monday,' the detective replied looking at the clock that stated that it was eleven minutes past ten. 'What day is it?' Suddenly she was unsure how long she had been in Jarrod's apartment.

'Friday. You slept through Thursday.
